Jeremy Dowden Makes All-State Band

KHS Lion's Pride Newspaper

By Sara McKinney

Congratulations to Jeremy Dowden, KHS senior, for receiving all-state band.

Dowden has played the trombone for six years and is very dedicated to

succeeding.

He practices everyday in band class and three or four times a

week at home, he said.

Dowden has competed in region, area, and solo/ensemble competitions, and this is his

first time to advance to state.

At the state competition he was required to play seven necessary scales,

and a slow piece, a fast piece, and a technical piece of music.

Dowden did an outstanding job at area, and placed fifth, allowing him to

make the cut for state, where the top five players performed a concert for

the public.

On February 11 he will go to San Antonio to try out for a chair position.

The highest ten trombones are invited to be part of the symphonic band.

He plans on attending Northwestern State University in Louisiana, and

playing in the band there.

By Carolyn Przybylski

Things are heating up in the Kaufman band world. The band and drill team plan to go to Washington D.C. Departure time is set for March 9 until March 14.

KHS Lions roar band is performing at Capitol Hill.

The students are going for educational, cultural, and experiential background benefits, Mr. John Mize, KHS Band director, said.

The students will be attending various exciting places. Some of these include the Hard Rock Café, Jefferson Memorial, driving past the White House, Arlington National Cemetery, and the American History Museum.

The students will miss three days of school, Mize said.

How did the band pay for this expense?

The band sold jewelry from a brochure and had a concert dinner, Mize said.

I am excited about visiting Washington D.C. and cant wait to get away from home for a while, Abby Alvarado, KHS junior, said.

The band/drill team will be traveling on a charter bus for about twenty- four hours.

When they get there, they will stay at a hotel called The Fairfield Inn. OHHH!!!! When you are packing make sure that u bring warm clothes because Mize says, It will be COLD.
