Next semester, Kaufman High School will no longer have one of its faculty members here.
Mr. Bob Hughes, KHS Agriculture Teacher for 22 years, has decided to retire this month.
Before he became a teacher at Kaufman High School, he worked for the Texas Department of Corrections as a corrections officer for six years and was also in the army for two years.
I enjoy teaching, said Bob Hughes, agriculture teacher at Kaufman ISD. If I didnt enjoy it I would have not stayed in it as long as I did.
Mr. Hughes has a Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M.
I enjoy seeing the students be successful and enjoying what they are doing, Hughes said. I enjoy being part of their lives and seeing them mature and helping them however I can.
Ag has a vocational program, which is the FFA (Future Farmers of America) it is the longest lasting vocational program in Texas.
Several students following in my footsteps and being ag teachers is one of my greatest accomplishments, Hughes said. Also having seven of my former students receiving the American FFA degree, which is the highest degree awarded in the FFA.
Once Hughes retires he plans to spend more time with his family and kicking back.
Eventually I will find something else to do, Hughes said. I am not a person to sit around the house. My wife has plenty of honey do jobs for me to catch up on.
Mr. Hughes has one daughter, Kim, in the eighth grade who shows cows.
According to Hughes he will go ahead and retire before Kim gets to high school and he will be able to spend more time with her, help her with her projects, and plans for the future.
I felt that this was the best thing for my family and me, said Hughes. Everyone knows when it is time to retire and I felt now was my time.
